The Mystery of the Tie

Ties.  A piece of fabric that is rung around a man's neck in an effort to make him look more authoritative at his workplace.  Kind of ironic, no?
Really, though.  Most of the items on a man's body serve a purpose.  Shirts, long sleeve or short sleeve, cover one's torso.  Pants cover legs. Belts hold pants up. Socks keep feet dry.  Shoes keep feet protected. Ties serve absolutely NO purpose.  If anything, I would think ties get in your way throughout the day.  Your tie slips into your cup of coffee sitting on your desk.  Your tie swings in a student's face as you bend over to check his work.  Your tie gets caught in your fly....?
I'll tell you what I think.  Ties can be compared to the female necklace.  It is merely an accessory that one tries to color coordinate with their outfit.  Not into color coordination?  That's fine.  Ties are also about style.  Who do you feel like being today?  Will you be hippy chic and go with a skinny tie and tie clip?  Or are you a traditional, fat tie kind of guy sporting those big diagonal stripes?  Do men put a lot of thought as to which tie to throw on in the morning, similar to a woman who stares in the mirror contemplating which piece of jewelry to accessorize with?
The tie.  Fashion accessory?  Male bling?  A noose?  You be the judge.
